1. Born Ruffians - Nova Leigh
|| I was super excited for these Canadians' new release, 'Say It', and it don't disappoint. This track builds in a really fantastic way, which is what made me love BRs in the first place.
2. Height With Friends - Twelve Strings
|| These Baltimore boys can't exactly rap well, but their beastie-boys-like flow is endearing, and the beat is hot, sampling Dick Dale maybe. Get the whole album here, from Friends Records.
3. The Black Keys - Everlasting Light
|| Taking a page from T. Rex on this nice-and-steady rocker, the beloved garage-blues duo from Ohio lays one down. From their recent 'Brothers.'
4. Cool World - Dream Shake
|| Nothing groundbreaking, but Cool World is a satisfying addition to the ranks of lo-fi-garage bands out there. From 'Gaydream Nation'.
5. Ratatat - Bob Ghandi
|| Their new 'LP4' uses most of the old Ratatat tricks plus a few new sounds added for flavor. I like the tabla on this one.
6. Caetano Veloso - Incompatibilidade de gênios
|| The Brazilian legend is still at it. And he's still good.
7. Nikoo - Marquee
|| New from the Netherlands, this track has some nice shout-singing over noise. Feels earnest. Get the EP free from the band.
8. LCD Soundsystem - Home
|| A classic track from LCD's new release 'This Is Happening'. Heavy on Talking-Heads-type moves, and quite good at them too- although, vocally, Murphy is no Byrne.
9. Crystal Castles - Violent Dreams
|| The Toronto duo's 2nd self-titled album is face-melting electronic brilliance. Most tracks are icy and hardd; this one just scares me.
10. Male Bonding - Nothing Use To Hurt
|| This band is OK, but I'm coming to view them as a grown-up Blink 182 who wants to sound like the Pixies. From 'Nothing Hurts'.
