tracklist and reviews after the jump
1. Take It Easy Hospital - Scenarios and Starlights
|| exciting demo from rising Iranian stars who had an indie documentary made about them. It's like twee-post-punk, plus their drummer is good.
2. Born Ruffians - Sole Brother
|| The first single from BR's upcoming album 'Say It.' If this track is any indication, SI should be a good one.
3. Wood Burning Stoves - His Ignorance is Encylcopedic
|| My favorite track on a recent self-titled EP . It's a bit too long, but what's there is pretty effective.
4. The Babies - Caroline
|| B-side from the 'All Things Come to Pass' 7" by this Brooklyn 3-piece with noteworthy members. The A-side didn't impress me, but 'Caroline' has some restrained spunk to it.
5. Pere Ubu - Surfer Girl
|| A truly inspired cover of this Beach Boys classic. From these cleveland art-rockers' 1995 album 'Ray Gun Suitcase.' Included on this mix as a counterpoint to the dreamier version (see number 11).
6. Strange Boys - Between Us
|| The emotional highpoint on 'Be Brave', the new LP from these garage revivalists.
7. The Rumble Strips - Back Bone
|| My favorite track from the RS's 'Welcome to the Walk Alone.' These brits are pretty popular in Europe now- and sure, why not. Terrible band name, but they've got one of the most soulful singers around, and masterful production too.
8. Harlem - Someday Soon
|| The killer opening track from this Austin garage trio's recent LP 'Hippies' on Matador. I've been singing it to myself all day.
9. CocoRosie - Surfer Girl
|| B-side to the adventurous 'Lemonade' 7". A tender, lullaby-like cover, more in line with the original. contrast to track 7.
10. Minor Constellations - Scientists
|| Best track on MC's recent EP 'Loveseat'. Sad and intimate stream-of-consciousness-like ukulele folk.
